10 powerful women in the world of comics

08/03/2019
  • We review 10 powerful women from the world of comics. These 10 ladies are the most powerful female characters that the Ninth Art has given us: from goddesses to superheroines, including bearers of pure power.

  • Although it has long been wrongly considered that superhero comics (or comics in general) are a man's world , nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, there are numerous prominent female figures who prove that they also have a lot of weight and power .

Taking advantage of the proximity of March 8, the date of International Working Women's Day , and also the release date of " Captain Marvel" , at Akira Comics we wanted to do our bit and support such a special day, remembering them .

In this new report we have gathered together what we believe to be 10 powerful women in the world of comics . That is, the female characters whose great power can tip the balance one way or the other in our favorite stories.

Whether we're talking about Marvel or DC, in the following text you'll find ladies who should be taken very seriously . For your own good.
  • 1. Death

  • Regardless of whether we are talking about the DC or Marvel version, the personification of Death is a woman of great power and influence in the cosmos of her respective Universe.

In DC and Vertigo, Death is represented by one of the aspects of the Eternals , 7 immortal brothers created by Neil Gaiman for his comic “ The Sandman ” and who represent an abstract concept : Dream, Destruction, Fate, Delirium, Desire, Despair and… Death. Of all of them, Death is the second in rank of power , being surpassed only by the eldest brother, Fate.

In Marvel, Lady Death is a matron of great power , in charge of balancing the cosmos and managing the demise of living beings. This thankless role, so undervalued, has sometimes forced her to resort to such unsavory agents as the Mad Titan Thanos . However, Lady Death is already one of the cosmic heavyweights of the Marvel Universe, as we already saw in The Infinity Gauntlet . "
  • 2. Nemesis

  • If there's such a thing as a powerful woman in Marvel, it's the entity known as Nemesis . Like the Greek deity of vengeance with whom she shares a name, Nemesis is a great power from the tapestry of the gods . Or rather, she was.

Nemesis is the embodiment of the 6 Infinity Stones . Originally, the 6 stones formed a single personality , this primordial goddess. At some point in her existence, Nemesis grew tired of her existence , although in the process she had the bad luck to create demons of Mephisto's kind .

Her first appearance in a comic book dates back to 1995 , although she had already been mentioned before (but not by name). The comic in question was the “ Avengers/Ultraforce ” crossover .
  • 3. Elaine Belloc

  • We return to DC comics; more specifically, to those of the Vertigo line , the adult imprint of the house of Batman and Superman. During volume 1 of “ Lucifer ”, the sequel to “The Sandman” written by Mike Carey, it was stipulated that Elaine was the daughter of the Archangel Michael . Therefore, in a twisted way, the granddaughter of God .

One of the central themes of the comic in question was God's abandonment of his throne and the struggle to become the new supreme deity of creation. Without giving away too many spoilers , we will tell you that, in the end, Elaine became her grandfather's substitute .

In other words: God is a pre-teen girl . How do you feel?
  • 4. Captain Marvel

  • The most powerful Avenger . Captain Marvel is a Kree-human hybrid , sharing the powers of the original Captain Marvel.

Carol Danvers was originally the head of security at an Air Force base. However, an attempt on the life of the superhero in question caused her DNA to mix with that of Captain Marvel , awakening in her a new personality and abilities.

For a time she was Ms. Marvel and then Binary. But recently she took on the title of Captain Marvel . If you want to know more about her story and how Carol Danvers became Captain Marvel, we recommend reading “ The Life of Captain Marvel ” .
  • 5. Supergirl

  • DC's other strong woman, Kara Danvers (Kara Zor-El) is Superman's cousin . Originally, she was the Man of Steel's "feminine" and youthful answer, but over time she became a character with her own entity and dimension .

Supergirl shares Superman's powers and sense of justice . She therefore tries to carry out her cousin's deeds .

In all fairness, Supergirl is just as powerful as Kal-El and can do just as much. The fact that she is younger and smaller limits her physical capabilities slightly, but she makes up for it with an equally big intellect and heart .
  • 6. Phoenix

  • Jea Grey is possibly the first female Marvel character to wield considerable power . The so-called Wonder Girl of the X-Men became the bearer of the Phoenix Force , a destructive and life-giving entity, in the 1970s. This made her flirt with her darker side , having the dubious honor of being one of the first heroines to become villains .

As the Phoenix, Jean Grey saw her telekinetic and telepathic abilities incredibly increased. On the other hand, she also acquired a certain pyrokinetic condition (control over fire) and mastery over matter and reality .

The price of such power? To recharge his batteries, he had to eat a star from time to time.
  • 7. Wonder Woman

  • The great feminist heroine and LGTBIQ icon could not be missing from this list. Wonder Woman is the strong woman of the DC Universe and a defender of minorities and the underprivileged . The warrior woman is, according to many interpretations, a goddess or an Amazon with mythical powers .

Whatever the case, one thing is certain: she is one of the few who can stand up to Superman and even stop him . Although she does not have his brute strength, her martial skill and cunning , as well as her training as a strategist , make her an asset to be taken into account if the Man of Steel must be stopped.
  • 8. Squirrel Girl

  • Squirrel Girl was a mutant born in the pages of an Iron Man adventure during the 90s. For a long time, she was considered a comic relief and a supporting character , who reemerged during the past decade thanks to screenwriters like Brian Michael Bendis.

Doreen Green is a squirrel-like mutant with a prehensile tail and enhanced agility. However, it has been tacitly but unspoken that she is virtually invincible . This has caused her to defeat the likes of Thanos, Galactus, Kraven, Wolverine … even the entire Marvel Universe !
  • 9. The White Violin

  • “The Umbrella Academy” is a series that has recently arrived on Netflix . However, its comic has been floating around since 2008. The plot of “ The Umbrella Academy ” is about a group of 7 adopted siblings with powers , whose father brought them together to create a supergroup.

The seventh, Vanya Hargreeves, apparently never developed any powers , only an overwhelming musical talent with the violin. However, at some point, it is discovered that Vanya is the most powerful of her siblings , being able to manipulate sound and sonic waves at will , being able to destroy the Moon if she so chooses.

Unfortunately, The White Violin (the nickname she adopts) decides to use her powers to take revenge on the world and her brothers , who she feels have always ignored her. Still, it must be said that Vanya Hargreeves (played in the series by Ellen Page) is a very powerful woman from the comics .
  • 10. She-Hulk

  • The female counterpart of The Incredible Hulk should not be missing from this list. She-Hulk is as powerful as her cousin's alter ego, Bruce Banner. Jennifer Walters (the heroine's real name) is also one of Marvel Comics' greatest lawyers , measuring herself as a lawyer toe to toe with luminaries like Matt Murdock.

That she also retains her personality and intelligence when she goes from being the small, timid Jennifer to the enormous She-Hulk is a detail we must also take into account. She is not only a bogeyman, but an emerald goddess of unlimited physical power .

That's it. But there are many more very powerful superheroines and strong women in comics. If you want to know more about them, we invite you to visit us at Akira Comics . Our staff will be happy to introduce you to their best adventures.
